We speak for ourselves!

I’m not the militant autistic type but even I am getting frustrated with all the codswallop in magazines and online. They are clearly put together by NTs and it shows!

I mean, we are the lick few people with autism who can word what’s in our minds. We are all the lucky few who may be self aware enough of our autsim and it should be people like us involved in these articles. We should be the voices of those who cannot speak.

I’d liken it to getting a white writer to put together an article on apartheid! Or a journalist who has never left a desk job doing a column about limb loss in the military! The only people who REALLY understand it is ourselves, those who live it every day.

These articles really get me down, I am getting fed up of other people spouting crap about “cures” and “causes”.

I had a work meeting with other people with “dis”abilities a few weeks ago. It was torture… As soon as I said I was autistic they all started to talk to me differently, it was totally awkward (and for an autie to say something was awkward, then you can be sure it was).

Some lady in the meeting, who may have been really nice, just kept interrupting me saying “I think what you are trying to say is…” In the end I just went… “No, what I was succeeding in saying was xxxx but that was before you interupted me”. She didn’t speak to me for the rest of the day… But I don’t care, my point was made and nobody else interupted me.

I don’t need people to fight my corner, I can do that well enough myself. Wether it’s good intentions or not, we need a voice… Our own damned voice!
